Indianapolis Grand Prix 2005
Monday, 20 June 2005 ‡ 22:27
If anybody saw the race and wandered what the hell is going on, here are the facts.
Michelin made the mistake of supplying the wrong tyres for their teams, so as by the rules, the FIA allows Michelin to provide the spare set that both manufacturers are allowed to carry to each race in case of such problems.
Michelin admit they do not have a spare set to supply to their teams.
The teams now begin to suggest the FIA bend the rules to allow them to race.
There is no reason the FIA should allow the construction of a chicane before turn 13, as this would have been an unkown factor for the teams and drivers and there was no time for testing this additional section.
The FIA acted with accordance to the rules. There is no way the circuit should be changed to suit the mistakes of one team or 2 teams or a supplier.
Michelin made the decision that it was unsafe for their teams to continue and therefore suggested they do not enter the race.
The teams should be talking to Michelin and concentrate their efforts on resolving this error, so that it does not occur again.
I feel sorry for the fans who travelled to Indianapolis to see the race, live. Michelin made a mistake, if anyone is liable for compensating the fans, it is Michelin.
