Fernando Alonso

Saturday, 25 June 2005 ‡ 22:19

With the past few years dominated by Ferrari and Michel Schumacher, it does make a refreshing change to see the other teams and drivers winning races.

Having said that though, it appears that Renault and Fernando Alonso are dominating this year. Could we have a new World Drivers Champion this year? If Alonso wins the F1 WDC, he will become the youngest ever F1 WDC. With Alonso's 24th birthday in July, whenever the official mark of his F1 WDC occurs, he will have won it by a long shot. He was the youngest ever F1 driver to get pole position, aged 21 and then the youngest ever to win a race, at 22.

Below is a list of the youngest champions in F1 history

  • 1972 FITTIPALDI 25y 08m 29d
  • 1994 SCHUMACHER 25y 10m 10d
  • 1975 LAUDA 26y 06m 16d
  • 1997 VILLENEUVE 26y 06m 17d
  • 1963 CLARK 27y 06m 04d
  • 1970 RINDT 28y 05m 16d
  • 1988 SENNA 28y 07m 09d
  • 1976 HUNT 29y 01m 25d
  • 1981 PIQUET 29y 02m 00d
  • 1958 HAWTHORN 29y 06m 09d

Could this be a sign of things to come for Alonso? I think we will have to wait and see, the season is not over yet. McLaren are promising, Kimi is fast, Monty has said he will be challenging Kimi for wins and the title. I think Schumacher has resigned to making sure he collects as many points as he can to become runner up.

Alonso has done a lot to gain the advantage over the other drivers this half of the season, Kimi and McLaren have struggled a fair bit this year and Kimi will have to win many if not all the remaining races with Alonso finishing 3rd or below, for Kimi to have any chance of winning.

My prediction is, Alonso will become FIA F1 World Drivers Champion 2005
